Education, Nonprofit & Government

Whether a government entity, education system, or public development projects ranging from baseball stadiums to major convention centers, entities in the public sector require leaders who can manage not only the traditional challenges but also the complicated management, budgeting and regulatory mandates that are necessary during today’s economic environment.

These searches pose unique challenges as budget constraints and the deep involvement of diverse stakeholders can impact the direction of each search. We have a tremendous history of meeting the needs of the various boards and search committees tasked with the responsibility of maintaining the level of service required by the entities they represent. This is due to our total team and search specific approach coupled with deep relationships throughout the public sector.

Case Study

K&A was asked to conduct an international search to help transform the public financing of one of the world’s largest and most advanced water and wastewater processing and treatment organizations. DC Water was undertaking some of the most expensive and robust reconstruction programs in the world of aged infrastructure dating over 150 years old.

K&A was tasked with finding someone with strong public finance experience, but also someone who was capable of being innovative and creative in identifying new ways of financing large major capital programs.

K&A conducted a national search to recruit a seasoned CFO to undertake complicated public sector financial challenges including the rehabilitation of a 100+ year old water and wastewater service system with infrastructure beyond its useful life. K&A conducted an expansive search including public and private organizations, Fortune 50 companies, non-profits, state and local government agencies, banking and financial institutions and private equity firms to identify the most innovative creative forward thinking financial executive. K&A identified Mr. Mark Kim, formerly with the NYC Comptroller’s office who was serving as Deputy Comptroller of Economic Development. Mr. Kim not only came in and modernized the agency’s aging financial systems, but brought about creative solutions to public financial including the worlds first ever 100 year bond program.

K&A has recruited over 30 other like type executives for DC Water in the past 20 years.
