Transportation

Our practice includes most of the major transit systems in the United States including some of the largest systems both domestically and abroad.

When Amtrak hired K&A in 1978 to fill a key senior role, our transit practice was born. Since then, we have successfully located not only excellent leaders for most major transit entities, but have supported team building and succession planning efforts as they evolve. We have witnessed the growth in complexity of these organizations both in the services offered as well as the external pressures they face. All must interact with and respond to community and politically-active boards and constituents as they work to keep transportation efficient, safe and affordable in the face of a declining tax base and rising energy costs.

A Relationship With NY MTA Spanning Four Decades

K&A was retained by the NY MTA to recruit a Chairman/CEO for the Governor of New York and the NY MTA’s Board of Directors after the prior Chairman/CEO left to manage the public railway in Hong Kong.

K&A conducted an international search to identify executive talent who could lead, manage and direct one of the world’s largest and most complex public transportation authority’s which includes subways, railroads, buses and bridges and tunnels. K&A sought executives from Fortune 500 companies, leaders in some of the world’s largest public entities, executives leading complicated infrastructure and public finance programs and leading innovation professionals across surface and air transportation. K&A worked closely with the Governor’s task force comprised of some of the most renouned public servants and public transit experts, K&A listened to the challenges facing the MTA including financial, labor, operational, infrastructure and organized labor and identified Mr. Joe Lhota, formerly the COO of New York City, serving under Mayor Rudi Guiliani. Mr. Lhota was able to forge relationships with political leaders on both sides of the aisle to obtain funding and resources needed to maintain the system as well as reach a labor agreement that had been stalled for years.

K&A has recruited over 250 executives for the MTA and its agencies over the past 40 years.
